Answering Service Cost per Minute (2026): Live vs AI

Live answering costs $1.30 to $5.00 per minute. We priced Ruby, PATLive, MAP and AnswerForce at the same volumes, plus AI options, from published rates.

Answering Service Cost per Minute (2026): Live vs AI

Most answering services publish a monthly price for a bucket of minutes. That makes them look easy to compare, until you notice that each one defines a minute differently, charges a different overage rate, and steps up in plan sizes that do not line up.

This guide puts four live answering services side by side using only their own published rates: Ruby, PATLive, MAP Communications, and AnswerForce. For each one we found the cheapest plan at the same monthly volume, so you can compare real totals instead of headline prices. Then we add the AI options for contrast.

All rates were checked October 12, 2026, on each company's pricing page. This article is published by Service Socket, which sells an AI front office, so we have kept every number traceable to its source.

Quick answer

  • Per included minute, live answering runs about $1.30 to $5.00, depending on the service and plan size. Larger plans cost less per minute.
  • Overage rates range from $1.28 to $2.99 per minute where they are published.
  • At 300 billable minutes a month, the cheapest published options are AnswerForce ($389), MAP Communications ($403), PATLive ($479), and Ruby ($1,725 on its 500-minute plan).
  • A "minute" is not the same everywhere. PATLive says it bills only live time on your calls. AnswerForce counts after-call work and rounds up every interaction.
  • AI answering costs far less per minute, from about $0.13 on a developer platform to around $1.00 for a finished AI front office at 300 minutes. The tradeoff is software instead of people.

Sources: Ruby pricing, PATLive pricing, MAP Communications pricing, and AnswerForce's plan sheet, all checked October 12, 2026. PATLive also lists a 50-minute plan ($99) and larger plans up to 5,000 minutes; MAP and Ruby offer larger plans on request. Per-included-minute figures are the monthly price divided by included minutes, rounded to the cent.

What each service counts as a minute

The rate card is only half the price. The other half is what gets billed.

  • PATLive says it bills only the time receptionists are live on your calls, with no charge for after-call notes, message entry, or wrap-up. It also lists no contracts, 24/7 and bilingual answering at no extra cost, and a 14-day free trial.
  • AnswerForce bills every interaction in whole minutes, rounded up, and counts after-call work, hold time, and transfer time. Its first 30 interactions under 30 seconds each month are free, and its terms set a 90-day minimum. Our AnswerForce pricing breakdown works through what that does to a real bill.
  • MAP Communications lists no long-term contracts, 24/7 coverage, English and Spanish, and a pay-as-you-go plan with no credit card required to start. Its pricing page does not state a billing increment.
  • Ruby describes an inclusive model with no activation, onboarding, setup, or after-hours fees, plus bilingual answering. Its plan page does not publish an overage rate or billing increment.

So the same 100 calls can produce different billable minutes at different services. A service that rounds up and counts wrap-up time can bill noticeably more minutes than one that bills live talk time only. Ask every vendor to bill a sample week of your real calls before you compare totals.

What live answering costs at the same volume

Here we priced each service at three monthly volumes by choosing its cheapest published plan for that volume, including overage where a smaller plan plus overage beats the next plan up. The volumes are hypothetical; for most trade calls, 100 billable minutes is very roughly 30 to 40 calls.

Billable minutes per monthRubyPATLiveMAP CommunicationsAnswerForce
150$720 (200-min plan)$293.50 (100-min plan + 50 min)$211.50 (125-min plan + 25 min)$349 (Intro)
300$1,725 (500-min plan)$479 (300-min plan)$403 (250-min plan + 50 min)$389 (Best Value)
600$1,725 + unpublished overage$938 (500-min plan + 100 min)$777 (500-min plan + 100 min)$854 (Growth + 100 min)

How a cell is calculated, using MAP at 300 minutes: the 250-minute Enterprise plan is $339, plus 50 minutes at $1.28 is $64, for $403. That beats the 500-minute plan at $649.

Three things stand out:

  1. Ruby is the premium option by a wide margin. Its smallest plan is $5.00 per included minute, and you buy the next plan up rather than paying a published overage.
  2. MAP Communications is the lowest-cost live option at small and large volumes in this comparison, with the lowest published overage at $1.28 to $1.37.
  3. AnswerForce looks cheapest at exactly 300 minutes, but its minutes include after-call work and rounding. If the same calls bill 15% more minutes there, the advantage disappears.

Plan choice matters as much as vendor choice. At 150 minutes, PATLive's 100-minute plan plus overage ($293.50) is cheaper than its own 200-minute plan ($349).

What AI answering costs per minute

AI answering is priced differently: per minute of usage, per call, or as a platform fee with included credits.

AI optionPublished pricePer-minute view
Retell AI (developer platform)$0.07 to $0.31 per minute; about $0.13 on a typical buildAbout $0.13, plus your build and upkeep
Smith.ai AI ReceptionistFree for 25 calls; Pro $150/month for 75 calls ($2.00 per call), $2.50 per extra callAbout $0.67 at a three-minute average call
Service Socket Pro$299/month with 2,500 AI credits; metered overage beyond the poolAbout $1.00 at 300 minutes ($299 / 300)

Sources: Retell's pricing page (see our Retell AI pricing breakdown for the component math) and Smith.ai's AI receptionist pricing, checked October 12, 2026.

Service Socket's per-minute view depends on volume because the plan is a flat fee with included credits. On its published credit costs, a three-minute call uses 12 voice credits and a booking adds 5. So 100 calls with 40 bookings is about 1,400 credits, inside Pro's 2,500. At 600 minutes (about 200 calls), usage goes past the included credits and metered overage applies.

These are not like-for-like products. A developer platform is a building block. A per-call AI receptionist and an AI front office come built. A live service puts a person on every call. Price is one input; what happens after the call is another.

When paying for people is worth it

Live answering earns its higher price when:

  • Your callers expect a human voice, or your brand promise depends on it.
  • Calls need judgment you do not want automated: distressed customers, complex commercial intake, high-value sales.
  • You need a person to make decisions on the call, not just route it.
  • Your call volume is low enough that a small plan covers it comfortably.

AI answering is the better value when:

  • Most calls follow a pattern: new service requests, scheduling, hours, service area, and quote requests.
  • You get spikes (storms, heat waves, Monday mornings) that would push a minute bucket into overage.
  • You want the call to land as a booked job, not a message someone returns later.
  • You want website chat handled the same way as the phone.

Many shops use both: AI handles routine calls and after-hours, and emergencies or unusual calls transfer to a person. If after-hours coverage is your main gap, see your front desk never clocks out.

Before choosing, put a number on the calls you are losing today. Our HVAC missed-call estimate runs the math with your own call volume and average ticket. For HVAC specifically, our HVAC answering service guide prices these options in a slow month and a heat wave.

Where Service Socket fits

Service Socket is an AI front office for service businesses, priced as a platform rather than by the minute:

  • Starter $99/month with 500 AI credits and 1 phone line. Pro $299/month with 2,500 AI credits and up to 3 lines. Every plan includes unlimited technicians, and usage beyond the included credits is metered overage.
  • One Customer Agent on voice and website chat, booking against real availability into native leads and jobs.
  • Emergencies handled as a warm transfer to a person, who hears a spoken summary first.
  • Quotes, invoices, and online payments from Starter, with outbound follow-up on Pro.

What it is not: a live answering service. It does not put a human on every call, it does not sync jobs into ServiceTitan, Housecall Pro, or Jobber today (those integrations are on the roadmap), and at high volume its included credits will not cover every minute. At 150 minutes, MAP's live service ($211.50) costs less than Service Socket Pro; at 300 minutes, Pro ($299) costs less than any live option here.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an answering service cost per minute?

Among the live services we compared, the cost per included minute ranges from about $1.30 on MAP Communications' Premium plan and AnswerForce's Best Value plan to $5.00 on Ruby's smallest plan. Published overage rates range from $1.28 to $2.99 per minute. Rates checked October 12, 2026.

What is the cheapest live answering service?

In this comparison, MAP Communications had the lowest totals at 150 and 600 billable minutes and the lowest published overage rates. AnswerForce was cheapest at exactly 300 minutes, but it counts after-call work and rounds every interaction up to a whole minute.

How many calls is 100 answering service minutes?

It depends on call length and how the service bills. PATLive estimates about 40 calls per 100 minutes. Services that round up and count wrap-up time will bill more minutes for the same calls.

Do answering services charge for after-hours calls?

Ruby, PATLive, MAP Communications, and AnswerForce all list 24/7 coverage in their plans. Ruby and PATLive state there are no night, weekend, or holiday fees, and AnswerForce says after-hours answering costs nothing extra.

Is an AI receptionist cheaper than an answering service?

Usually, per minute. A developer platform like Retell runs about $0.13 per minute, Smith.ai's AI receptionist is about $2.00 per call on its Pro plan, and Service Socket Pro works out to about $1.00 per minute at 300 minutes. Live services in this comparison cost $1.30 to $5.00 per included minute.

What should I ask before signing with an answering service?

Ask how minutes are counted (live time only, or wrap-up and hold too), the billing increment, the overage rate, any setup fee, the minimum term, and whether bilingual and after-hours coverage cost extra. Then ask them to bill a sample week of your real calls.

Compare totals, not headline prices

Answering service pricing looks simple until you line up minute definitions, overage rates, and plan sizes. Price two plan sizes at your real volume, ask how minutes are counted, and include the calls you would rather a person handle.

If AI answering fits your shop, compare the answering-service alternatives, review Service Socket pricing, or get started without a minute bucket.
